  • The Story Behind Status

    By Jayant D Mahajan

After passing out from Walchand College of Engineering, I shifted from Sangali to Satara and started a small engineering unit, the unit was started with the aim of pragmatically utilizing the engineering knowledge I had.

The opportunity knocked when I was talking about my venture with two of my school friends. Both of them are surgeons, one specialised in Urology and the other one is in orthopedics. They had started hospital together. The friend who is an orthopaedic surgeon brought out the point that he was not able to perform surgeries like orthoscopy as the Orthoshaver an essential equipment to perform the surgery had to be imported at unaffordable cost. This brought out the gap or rather a need of developing surgical and other related equipment. Orthoshaver became the first product of this need. Thorough understanding and experimentation helped us develop the first Orthoshaver at functional cost.

And with this began the journey of ‘Status Medical Equipments’. The 30 years journey is built henceforth. Development of Orthoshaver made further journey intriguing. After Orthoshaver, we developed Hydromat, a peristaltic pump which creates powerful jet of water at the tip of Ureterenoscope & facilitates its insertion in Ureter. It was well accepted by urologists as insertion of big size ureternoscope was difficult task. Those were the days when internet was not available. The sources of latest information about new developments in the field of medical equipment were briefs from the senior surgeons visiting the developed countries, & fresh surgeons coming back from these countries after their post-graduation.

At that time, for endoscopic kidney stone lithotripsy, only available equipment was Ultrasonic lithotripter. However, it was very slow, non-effective on hard stones and size of probes were bigger. As per our UK returned friend, recently developed, Pneumatic Lithotripters was fast with choice of small probes & capable of disintegrating of any kidney stone, but most of the Indian urologist were not able to buy that because of high cost in Indian rupees. Considering this, we decided to develop Pneumatic Lithotripters. Status medical Equipment became one of the first two Indian manufactures of Pneumatic Lithotripters the Calculiclast!

Over the years, Status Medical Equipments developed, India’s first weight sensor based uroflowmeter, The Flowcomp, wireless uroflowmetry-Flowcomp-NG, The Auto-Tersus an US patented technology, based, self-cleaning urine flowmeter, We are pioneer manufacturer of Urodynamic measuring system – Urocomp-2000.Recentally we become the first Indian company to successfully manufacture an Holmium Yag Laser Lithotripters, The Astra-30 We are proud that over the years SME has served Urological fraternity, by manufacturing state of the art products. Atmanirbhar’ was not a buzz word then but the motivation and intention that came through my friends’ need lead us to develop the equipment and has been the same for past 30 years.

This is a brief introduction of Status Medical Equipment, Henceforth, through this blog, I will share my technical knowledge regarding application & use of our manufactured range of products.

While visiting a leading urologist from Mumbai, I asked his assistant feedback about the ‘Flowcomp’ a weight sensor type uroflowmeter which we manufacture. The assistant told me that it is working fine, without any trouble. I sensed that he wanted to talk more but was hesitant.

When I explored more he opened up he told me that emptying the urine filled beaker is an unwanted task for everybody.

Many times there is urine spillage on the floor during or after the test. To clean it is an additional unhygienic task. I agreed that the problems were genuine but at that time I had no solution to offer. This input triggered a thought process & after many brainstorming sessions we finalized design of Self Cleaning Urine flow meter It was an innovative design & we got US & Indian patents for it.

Based on this design We developed Auto-Tersus The self cleaning urine flow meter. It is like male urinal, the patient does not feel that he is going through a test. Naturally the Uroflowmetry test truly represents his normal voiding pattern. After the test the urine is drained automatically & the urine flow meter is cleansed with tap water. Obviously the first installation of Auto -Tersus was done at the Mumbai clinic. The happy smile of the assistant gave me immense satisfaction.

  • The Calculiclast

All urologists will agree that, the Pneumatic Lithotripters is a must have equipment in a kidney stone treatment set up. Although other advanced stone breaking devices like holmium Yag Laser Lithotripters are available now; the humble old warrior is the friend in need of urologist.

In India, we can compare it with Mahindra make utility vehicles It is quite reliable, easy to maintain, as Mahindra vehicle can be repaired by a roadside mechanic, the Pneumatic Lithotripters is easily reparable, many times the O.T. assistant does the trick in nick of time. The other most important thing In Indian contest is it is very cheap!

We, Status Medical are one of the pioneer manufacturing companies, of Pneumatic Lithotripters in India. From the year 1996 we are selling Intracorporeal Pneumatic Lithotripters in India & other countries under the brand name of CALCULICLAST. Many old timers tell me fondly about the positive impact the Calculiclast had done to their practice. At that time the imported Pneumatic Lithotripters were very costly the pricing was beyond bounds of normal private urologist. There was no alternative available to break uretic or kidney stone. except the ultrasonic burr, which was unreliable &was not effective on hard stones.

From those early days to till today we are manufacturing & selling quite a good number of Calculiclast lithotripters per year.

As a developer of the machine, I knew that we are offering a workable solution to the user, but I was not fully satisfied with it. There were seldom feedbacks regarding sticking of hand tool, not satisfactory breaking of the stone. The problem was in the hand tool, the most important part of the machine.

In the hand tool there is one piston which moves in a tube as pneumatic pulse is applied. In turn it gives impact to the stem of probe. The mechanism is quite simple! Just like cylinder & piston in diesel engine of Mahindra! The Mercedes car also has diesel engine, but it gives you absolute refined & efficient performance. I will say on the scale of 100 if Mercedes engine is on 95 Mahindra engines is on 90 In mathematics the difference is small, but we all know in practical every mark above 90 demands lot efforts & application.

So, we were on Mahindra scale, offering efficient workable solution, but lacking the consistent reliability of Mercedes. I knew the problem lies in making of the piston & tube. We also knew the solution, but its implementation was not possible because of small quantities & custom-made design. Ultimately with international sourcing & ingenious processes we have improved performance of Calculiclast. As a maker we always try to achieve the best & when we nearly do it the pleasure is immense!

Of course, proof of pudding is in the eating! I invite all urologists’ friends to use our new Hand tool of Calculiclast, the intracorporeal Pneumatic Lithotripters.
